Pedestals.

there are people
we would do anything
– and everything for
with or without reason

there are people
we would cross bridges for
if the bridge broke down
and we had to swim

there are people
who leave emptiness
in the mornings when they walk out the door
that we keep on coming back for

some of this is built on friendship
some of this is built on loneliness
some of this is built on believing
that people are
who you would like them to be

mistaking the way they make you feel
as though it may mean something real

it’s lifting people higher
than they sometimes should be held

and here’s the thing about
the people around you
being put on pedestals:
from the ground,
it can begin to hurt your neck if you are constantly looking up.
