Familiarity.

I miss you silently
Perhaps it all comes down to familiarity
But I thought I was past this

When I think of you
I think of oceanside homes in White Rock
A small basement suite in Burnaby
A residence dorm from four years ago

Back when I didn’t know what I wanted
And moved closer
And pulled away
Almost simultaneously.

But that’s been our story, anyway
Right?

A constant back and forth
Occasionally out of reach
But close enough that when it ends
We can blame it on

Bad timing
I need to be alone right now
You didn’t get it – the first time
The second time – those were your words – not mine.

I get it.

So I miss you from a distance
Occasionally
But I boil it all down to familiarity
And maybe a hint of feeling a bit lonely.
